The event that I attended this week was the UI steel band and i-pan concert at the Krannert center for preforming arts. There was actually a decent sized crowd that attended the show adding to the experience. The bands played a variety of songs. Some of which they created/arranged and others that were from well known bands, movies and other pop culture, including Starwars, Sonic the hedgehog and Cyndi Lauper to name a few. The steel pan gave you the feeling of being on a tropical island or the summer time but a fun fact that i learned from the band was that it is incorrectly associated with Jamaica. It actually originates from the Republic of Trinidad. The sounds that were produced by just these variations or drums was really amazing. It was really cool to hear how they arranged the different songs to allow for the correct notes to be made. The performers themselves were also quite entertaining to watch having then quickly move from side to side or get super close to their pans to create the softest of sounds. Some of the members got super into it and spun around as well.Overall it was a cool and entertaining event to attend and end the semester off with.
